Unrelated Lake Whatcom incidents keep law enforcement busy Saturday

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) personnel were kept busy Saturday, July 6th, as they responded to what appeared to be potentially 2 related incidents on Lake Whatcom including 1 where an individual was discovered with significant head injuries.

According to WCSO Spokesperson Deb Slater, about 7:30pm, deputies were dispatched to a report of aa hit-and-run boating collision. According to radio transmissions at the time, a boat tied to a private dock on the west side of the lake was hit by a personal watercraft which then fled.

Slater said that about 8pm a call came into What-Comm 911 reporting a body with significant head injuries was found in a raft in the water on North Shore Drive on the east side of the lake.

The reporting party thought the victim had been hit by a boat. Assuming the calls may be related, fire and law enforcement personnel were both dispatched. The people who had found the body brought it across the lake to the location of the collision due to fire personnel already being on scene.

The body, a male in his early twenties, was found to have a single gunshot wound to the head, declared deceased at the scene and a firearm was recovered. He was listed as a missing person out of Snohomish County for 2 days.

The boating collision is a minor incident being investigated by the WCSO Marine Unit.
