Washington State DOT officials warn to expect a much longer commute this morning if traveling southbound on I-5 into Skagit County and beyond.

An overturned semi truck has blocked both lanes of southbound I-5 at the North Lake Samish on-ramp (milepost 246). Traffic is being detoured off I-5 at the North Lake Samish interchange for about 3 miles along North Lake Samish Drive to East Lake Samish Drive and back onto I-5 southbound at Nulle Road.

Drivers are advised to be patient and expect long delays. No estimate has been given for when the lanes will be reopened.

According to aid and law enforcement radio transmissions, the semi overturned into the media shortly after 2:30am and the driver was able to climb out on their own, suffering only minor injuries.

Roads were reported to be slick in places in the area.

UPDATE 7:50am
WSDOT officials confirmed the southbound lanes remain blocked.

The 5-mile backup extends northward to the Fairhaven Parkway interchange where the WSDOT shows traffic driving the wrong way down the on-ramp to avoid the backup.
