Neighbors on Poplar Drive and Poplar Place are on a heighten state of alert after a young boy reported being chased Friday about 5:30pm by someone wearing a “Jason”-style hockey mask.
According the Ferndale Police Sergeant Kevin Davis, the boy’s mother said the child was outside and came upon a man wearing a “Jason”-style hockey mask (as was worn by the main character in the “Friday the 13th” series of horror movies). The child yelled he was going to call 911 and ran home. The man ran after the child, then turned and ran the other way. By the time the boy’s mother looked outside, the man was nowhere to be found.
Police were made aware of the incident the next day and advised the boy’s mother to call 911 right away in the future if she sees anyone acting suspicious in the neighborhood.
Sergeant Davis advises kids to
* Use the buddy system
* Always let your parents know where you are and where you will be
Davis also advises parents to consider letting their kids carry disconnected cell phones. Disconnected phones will still work to dial 911 in an emergency. The kids also need to know to only dial 911 in case of an emergency while carrying the phones.
