A 2-vehicle crash partially blocked the intersection of Thornton Street and Vista Drive this afternoon before 3:30pm. According to Ferndale Police, the driver of one of the vehicles fled after the crash while the driver in the other vehicle required attention by aid crews at the scene.

Ferndale Police Sergeant Kevin Davis said a 2006 Dodge Charger was southbound on Vista Drive while a 2010 Honda Odyssey was eastbound on Thornton Street. The Dodge failed to stop at the 4-way stop and collided with the Honda.

Davis said the driver of the Dodge was on his phone when he drove through the stop sign. That driver then fled the scene on foot.

The driver of the Honda was treated at the scene and released by Whatcom County Fire District 7 aid crews.

The driver of the Dodge was located by Ferndale Police officers approximately 45 minutes later. Davis said the suspect, Israel Cruz-Perez, aged 24, was given criminal citations for hit-and-run and no valid operator’s license with no ID. He was also given an infraction for no insurance and cell phone use while driving. He avoided being booked into the Whatcom County Jail due to the high jail population at the time.

Multiple airbags in both vehicles had deployed and both vehicles were heavily damaged and appeared to have both been totaled according to Davis.
