State Patrol Seeks Witnesses to I-5 Fatality Accident

A number of accidents occurred in the area following last Friday’s unexpected hailstorm. One involved a Washington State Patrol trooper who was parked while investigating a non-injury rollover accident in the median about 5 miles north of Ferndale. The WSP has put out a call for witnesses to that accident.

According to a request sent out from the WSP,

The Washington State Patrol’s Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) is investigating a two-vehicle fatality collision that occurred at approximately 4:28 p.m. on Friday, December 18, 2015. A state trooper was parked on the inside shoulder of I-5 at milepost 268 in Whatcom County finishing the investigation of a prior collision, when the driver of a 2003 Buick LeSabre crossed onto the shoulder and struck the rear of the patrol car. The driver of the Buick suffered fatal injuries and the trooper serious head trauma. The trooper was treated at a local hospital and has since been released.

MAIT detectives are examining all aspects that lead to this collision and seek additional witnesses to the actual event or anything leading up to or after the crash. If you know anything about this collision, or know someone who does, you are asked to call Detective Sergeant Jerry Cooper @ (425) 508-0602, or e-mail @ jerry.cooper@wsp.wa.gov.
