SSC garbage and recycling pickup canceled today due to unsafe road conditions

WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — Sanitary Service Company, Inc. (SSC) announced this morning they would not be doing garbage and recycling pickup today due to unsafe road conditions. The company serves Bellingham, Ferndale, Birch Bay, Blaine and the majority of unincorporated Whatcom County.

Due to unsafe road conditions as a result of snow and ice, Sanitary Service Company (SSC) will not be operating today (1/6/22).  We plan on returning to our normal operating schedule tomorrow.  For customers with scheduled pick up today, their schedule will be as follows:

Garbage: Collected the following week (inc. every-other-week and monthly customers). Use plastic bags for extra garbage.

Recycling: Collected on your next regularly scheduled day. Please place extra material next to recycling bins in an open cardboard box or plastic container (basket, bucket, etc.) no larger than a curbside recycling bin.

FoodPlus!: Collected on your next regularly scheduled day. Please place extra bulky yard waste (branches, etc.) next to your FoodPlus! toter. For smaller yard debris, food scraps or compostable packaging, please bag in a thick paper bag designed for yard debris or a compostable bag. SSC announcement (January 6, 2022)

Customers can visit the SSC website for additional information.

I’m all for keeping your personal safe. But the biggest Question is will we still be charged for you not picking it up. I pay for once a week now its been 2 weeks. I worked for a Business like yours years ago. And was told we couldn’t Charge for sevices not render. That was Fed laws.

I’m in agreement with Raymond. There better be an adjustment on my bill!

SSC made it very clear on their website that no refunds or credits will be given to customers. There is a cryptic sentence that states you may take your trash to a SSC “drop box”, although they don’t actually tell you where that is. Looks like they want folks to put the 2 weeks of trash that they chose not to pick up in “bags” on the next garage day.

I called for an early pickup two weeks ago, before my vacation, but that was $9 dollars extra. Do we all get a credit to our accounts because you did not show up? I was able to get my garbage to the curb in the snow, which was 200 feet from my house down a hill!
