Whatcom Unified Emergency Management has enabled the public to opt-in to a text-message system that sends out alerts in the event of emergencies. These would include natural disasters such as earthquakes and tsunamis, man-made disasters such as the pipeline fire of 1999 as well as incidents blocking primary traffic thoroughfares.
The system is designed to enable you to select alerts from only the areas within Whatcom County you want to be informed about.
