BELLINGHAM, Wash. — First responders were dispatched to the northbound lanes of I-5 between Lakeway Drive and Iowa Street about 11:40am today, Tuesday, July 19th, due to a report of a possible injury rollover crash involving a single vehicle.
Initial reports from the scene were that the driver was walking around the vehicle.
Bellingham Fire Department aid personnel cleared the scene without transporting any patients according to the PulsePoint dispatch reporting system.
As of 12pm, Washington State Patrol were on scene and reported the right lane was open while the left lane remained closed. A 2-mile traffic backup had formed to the south.
Washington State Patrol Trooper Jacob Kennett told Whatcom News that a Ford Explorer had left the roadway and struck the cable barrier in the median and rolled. As a result, the Ford ended up entangled in the cables.
Kennett said the driver, the only occupant, was not injured and would be cited for improper lane usage.
Sorry to laugh, but “improper lane usage”? Left the roadway, hit the cable barrier, rolled, and became entangled in the median cables! I guess “improper lane usage” sorta covers it?!
