Law enforcement were dispatched yesterday to investigate a report of a person hitting and kicking a dog as well as pounding its head on the pavement in the 6000 block of Portal Way.

A Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office deputy was in the immediate area at the time of the dispatch and was able to respond quickly. A Ferndale Police officer responded immediately as well.

According to Ferndale Police Lieutenant Bill Hatchett, the deputy and the officer both made contact with the suspect and, after assessing the dog’s physical condition and observing how the animal interacted with the suspect, determined the report of animal cruelty was unsubstantiated.
