BELLINGHAM, Wash. — The 24-hour rainfall total reported at the Bellingham International Airport was 2.2 inches this morning, October 27th. The average rainfall for the entire month of October in the Whatcom County lowlands is about 4 inches.
The light rain began about 11pm yesterday but the localize deluge began about 1:30am and continued through 3am creating surface water flooding problems around the area including a collapse along the northbound lanes of I-5 approaching the Sunset Drive interchange that closed all lanes. As of 7:45am, traffic was being diverted off I-5 at the Lakeway Drive interchange.

Bellingham Police Department provided the following list of roads impacted.
- Northshore Dr / Britton Rd – significant water over roadway
- Alabama St / Woburn St – Yew St – deep water over the roadway
- Sunset Dr / Barkley Blvd – deep water in the eastbound lanes of traffic
- Iowa St / Moore St – deep water over roadway – northbound I-5 on- and off-ramps closed
- 600-700 blocks of Samish Way – a foot of water over the roadway
First responders were dispatched to about 12 flooding-related calls around the Bellingham area.

For comparison, a Ferndale weather station reported a half inch of rainfall during the same time period.
Additional reports of water over roadways have also been reported.
