Nooksack River crested Sunday afternoon – some roads closed

Drivers got a rude surprise this afternoon as the Nooksack River crested at almost 16′ in Ferndale and flooded low-lying roads.

The following roads had water across both lanes and either had “road closed” signs in place or were soon going to.

  • The corner of Paradise Road and Barrett Road
  • Barrett Road between Paradise Road and W Axton Road
  • Ferndale Road north of Marine Drive
  • Marine Drive between Rural Avenue and Lummi Shore Drive

Ferndale Road north of Slater Road had water over both lanes but remained passable.

Although “road closed” signs were in place on Marine Drive at both Rural Avenue and Ferndale Road, several vehicles were seen driving around the signs. One driver was seen stopped in the roadway after driving through the water over Barrett Road without slowing down. They appeared unable to restart their engine.
