No tsunami risk for US west coast regions following M7.8 earthquake in Russia

About 1:05pm (Pacific Time) on Thursday, September 18, 2025, a tsunami statement was issued for the Pacific coastal regions of British Columbia, Washington, Oregon and California by the NOAA/National Weather Service US Tsunami Warning System after an M7.8 earthquake had been detected about 12pm off the coast of Russia, 90 miles SE of Petropavlovsk, Kamchatka, in the western Pacific Ocean.

The earthquake was reported at a depth of 6 miles. The epicenter is within 10 miles of a recent M8.7 earthquake in July.

In the 1:05pm statement, a tsunami advisory was issued for some Alaska coasts.

Tsunami Advisory in Effect for;

* ALEUTIAN ISLANDS, Amchitka Pass, Alaska (125 miles W of Adak) to Attu, Alaska

For other US and Canadian Pacific coasts in North America, there is no tsunami threat.
