Two years after returning from California to be close to family, Jessie Anderson found herself longing for the country dance clubs she had gone to there. While she and friends would go line dancing at the local grange hall, she saw the need for something better without having to travel across the border or south to King County. Hence, Kickin’ A Saloon & Dance Hall was born.
Anderson told Discover Ferndale, “I wrote up a business plan and then I went back and read it and thought, ‘This is actually a pretty good idea.” That was two years ago.
Finding the right building was the hardest part according to Anderson. Many were affordable except they required a sprinkler system upgrade which made them unaffordable. Then Anderson found the building they’re in at 5225 Industrial Place (south of W Smith Road and east of I-5) and at the time it was just a shell and a dirt floor. “Everything you see and can’t see, we have added to the building,” said Anderson. “Working with our landlord, Sam Boulos, and contractor, Credo Construction, has been a phenomenal experience.”
According to Anderson, Kickin’ A Saloon & Dance Hall will be different from other local venues because of her dedication to country-western music and its very large dance floor. Dance classes will be offered, initially for line dancing but two-step and western swing will be added in the near future. There will be a live band every Saturday.
Kickin’ A Saloon & Dance Hall will be open Tuesday’s through Saturday’s beginning at 6:30pm. In addition to the full liquor menu there is beer and wine, a menu of appetizers will be available. Anderson expects to develop a bigger food menu over time.
The public opening will be May 13th with the first live show with Aaron Crawford currently scheduled for May 21st. The current schedule of live performers is available in the Discover Ferndale calendar.
