Nationwide CenturyLink outage impacts 911 services but not What-Comm 911

Officials at the What-Comm Emergency Communications Center said they were still operating at full functionality tonight.

This announcement came after a nationwide CenturyLink service outage impacted some 911 dispatch centers today, December 27th, including many in western Washington.

About 10am this morning, CenturyLink officials announced they were aware of “a disruption affecting customer services.” Some business and residential CenturyLink customers were reported to have been impacted.

At 11:30pm, a statewide emergency alert message was sent out advising people of the 911 service outages in other areas in Washington state.

CenturyLink service is available in some parts of Washington state including parts of Ferndale and Bellingham according to the company website.

About 8:30pm, the company released the following announcement,


CenturyLink engineers and technicians have identified a network element that was impacting customer services and are addressing the issue in order to fully restore services. We estimate that services will be fully restored within four hours.

The loss of telephone and/or internet service meant some businesses needed to close until service was restored or stay open but on a cash-only basis since credit and debit card processing would not be an option.
