Lummi Nation man sentenced to 5 years in federal prison for domestic assault

According to a press release from the US Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Washington, 49-year-old Marc Cagey Oreiro was sentenced on August 12, 2026, in US District Court in Seattle to 5 years in prison followed by 3 years of supervised release.

According to court records, Oreiro pleaded guilty on June 6, 2026, to assault by strangulation of a former intimate partner.

On May 23, 2025, Oreiro assaulted a former intimate partner in a residence on the Lummi Nation Indian Reservation. Oreiro pushed the victim onto a bed, strangled her with his hands and forearm, punched her in the head, back, stomach, side, and ear, struck her ribs with his knee, knelt on her chest, and threatened to kill her.

According to court records, Lummi Nation Police Department officers responded to the residence after a housemate called 911. Officers located Oreiro inside the residence, where he physically fought with officers. Officers found the victim inside a closet. The victim was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment for injuries to her face, ears, and neck.

Oreiro was arrested on federal charges on June 4, 2025, and held at the Federal Detention Center in SeaTac. A grand jury returned an indictment on June 25, 2025.

Judge King also imposed a $50,000 fine. Restitution will be determined at a later date.

At sentencing, Judge King spoke directly to the victim in this case noting that she was “brave,” that no one deserves to be treated the way that she was, and that her actions “may have prevented other women from becoming victims in the future.” The judge noted that the victim did the right thing by reporting to law enforcement. “Based upon Mr. Oreiro’s history, it is unlikely this pattern of violence would have stopped without intervention from the justice system,” the judge said.
