BLAINE, Wash. — First responders were dispatched about 3:40pm on Sunday, September 20, 2026, due to reports of smoke in the area of Drayton Harbor Road and Harborview Road in Blaine.

North Whatcom Fire and Rescue (NWFR) Fire Chief Jason Van der Veen told Whatcom News that crews from NWFR and the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) arrived to find an estimated 2 acres involved. Total acres involved reached 4 or more acres.

Access issues at the scene hampered firefighting operations, according to Van der Veen. No structures were involved and no injuries were reported among civilians or firefighters. No road closures were needed, though water tenders staged on Drayton Harbor Road during the response.

According to Van der Veen, a dirt bike was reported to have been heard riding in the area before seeing smoke. In the absence of any other obvious ignition source this is considered the cause.

NWFR units were on scene for about 5 hours, and DNR units remained on scene several hours longer.
