It began snowing again in earnest as the Ferndale City Council got under way yesterday at 6pm. It was over inside of an hour due to a couple presenters not able to appear (likely due to the weather).

Ferndale’s new Chief of Police, Kevin Turner, was introduced and he spoke briefly to the council and the community. He had just been sworn in earlier in the day.

Transpo Group and the Ferndale Heritage Society were unavailable to make their scheduled presentations to the council.

Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) were discussed and two related ordinances brought forward to the council for approval. Both sent back to committee for copy changes.

The council was unanimous in approving contracts for construction and construction management and engineering for a new city water well. Public Works Director Kevin Renz told the council this well was expected to reach far deeper into and provide more information about the aquifer under Ferndale.

The Mayor presented a new appointee, Connie Faria, for a position on the Ferndale Planning Commission. Faria was previously a Ferndale Councilmember and Ferndale Parks, Recreation and Trails Advisory Board (PRTAB) member.

Two councilmembers, Carol Bersch and Brent Goodrich, who had previously opposed the Mayor’s appointment in light of what was seen as inappropriate treatment of the commissioner, Yvonne Goldsmith, whose term the Mayor chose not to continue, spoke. Both said, while they remained unhappy with how things had transpired, it was time to move forward. The council voted 5 to 2 to approved Faria for the position, with Councilmembers Keith Olson and Cathy Watson opposed.

The meeting was adjourned about 6:50pm.
