1 jailed after man found dead at Old Samish Road residence

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Bellingham Police closed the 1700 block of Old Samish Road of Wednesday, June 6th, to conduct an investigation. They later announced the closure was due to a murder investigation.

Bellingham Police later issued a statement that What-Comm 911 had received a call from James Singleton, age 36, about 9:10am reporting that 2 days earlier he and another man had been taking drugs and fought at a home on Old Samish Road.

Singleton told the call reciever that the victim was barely breathing.

When officers arrived on scene, they located and detained James Singleton without incident. Based on the information provided by James Singleton, officers and medics made entry into the home to check if anyone was in need of medical assistance; an adult male was located with what appeared to be injuries caused by blunt force trauma. Medics declared the male deceased.

Based on interviews with James Singleton and the assistance of a Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office K9 team, a hammer believed to be associated with the assault was located near a walking path to Arroyo Park.

Search warrants were requested and granted for the property and a section of the roadway in front of the property was closed to secure the scene.

Singleton was arrested and booked into the Whatcom County Jail charged with suspicion of 1st-degree murder. He does not appear to have prior local court appearances.

The victim has been identified and efforts were underway to identify and notify next of kin.

Police say the road was reopened about 5pm and the investigation is ongoing.
