In case you missed it, Main Street traffic will be impacted when traffic in both directions will be stopped periodically between noon and 4pm today. Most neighbors probably do not know how necessary this traffic interruption will be.
At last night’s Ferndale City Council meeting, Public Works Capital Projects Manager Katy Radder explained the need. Radder told the council how the pump station upgrade project was progressing and it will be at the point tomorrow when the sewer main leading into the pump will be disconnected and replaced.
The replacement main will enable monitoring flow and other advantages the old main currently does not provide.
While the main is disconnected, raw sewage through the pump station will not be able to flow to the treatment plant. This creates a critical need to instead capture and truck the sewage to the plant. Hence, the truck will need to make multiple trips during the afternoon while the main is replaced.
From noon to 4pm today, according to a city announcement yesterday, traffic on Main Street will be intermittently stopped at 1st Avenue and also at Hovander Road to allow the pump truck get into and out of the pump station site with its delicate load.
Update 1pm
So far, traffic delays have been only momentary to enable the pump truck to pull on and off Main Street from the project site and at 1st Avenue without delay. The resulting impact to traffic flow has been minimal.
