FERNDALE, Wash. — StrEAT Food Owner and Operator James Pitzer announced yesterday, November 18th, he and co-owner Poem Pitzer will be parking the trailer for good after this week.

StrEAT Food launched in 2010 in the parking lot at 6220 Portal Way serving breakfast and lunch menus. The food truck also began showing at several weekend sports events where their breakfast fare was very popular.

It was during these early days customers began being endearingly referred to as “StrEAT urchins” and the trailer would be said to be “hitting the streets full-tilt boogie.”

StrEAT Food was invited to set up outside several microbreweries in Bellingham where they became a mainstay for many. In December of 2014, in addition to operating the food truck, Pitzer opened a cafe location with the same name inside the Bellingham Ferry Terminal in Fairhaven.

The StrEAT Food trailer continued returning to its roots in Ferndale weekly in the Samuel’s Furniture parking lot on Main Street until construction of what is now Starbucks and Windermere Real Estate offices made that impossible in 2017.

In April of 2019, StrEAT Food returned to Ferndale setting up one day a week outside of FrinGe Brewing soon after the brewery opened. At the time, Pitzer said, “I’m super excited to be back. I spent 7 years dragging this box around Ferndale, 2 before Kulshan opened, and I feel that FrinGe is exactly what we’ve needed.”

Pitzer posted yesterday’s announcement to the company’s Facebook page.

After a bit of contemplation, I have decided to hang it up. It’s been a fun ride, but it has taken its toll on my health: physical, mental, and financial. We will be open today at FrinGe Brewing, tomorrow at Kulshan Brewing Company Sunnyland, and Friday at Wander Brewing for our final services. Please come out and say goodbye and allow me to thank you all for over 10 years of support and love. Peace ~ James

Facebook post – StrEAT Food Owner/Operator James Pitzer

Pitzer and his crew faced many unique challenges over the years including broken axles, flat tires, frozen pipes, gas leaks, equipment breakdowns and burglaries. He once said, “It really is like taking the worst camping trip you can imagine every day sometimes.”

StrEAT Food menus changed frequently and reflected Pitzer’s creativity. The last menu posted on their website included burgers featuring seasoned Certified Angus Beef (including an ever-popular gorgonzola burger), pitas (including gyro and falafel), “StrEAT” tacos, potato poblano soup, yam fries, hummus with pita bread and crème brulee. Past menus have included shrimp and grits, chile brise pork po’ boys, orange coriander slaw, rock fish tacos and white bean pumpkin soup with pomegranate crème fraiche.

StrEAT Food customers may not have realized how much experience went into creating the items on the menu. Pitzer is a Texas Culinary Academy graduate whose resume includes highly-rated Dallas, Texas restaurants like The Green Room, Stone Trail, Breadwinners and Ancho’s in the Omni Austin Hotel.
