Horseless Carriages Converge on Pioneer Park

Horseless Carriage Club bellingham marathon tour 2015 stops in Ferndale pioneer parkIt was not without a bit of “hubbub” that about 50 classic “horseless carriage” vehicles rolled into Ferndale today, September 14th. One reader was relieved to hear this story would contain pictures because, as she put it, “I had to convince myself not to stop in the middle of traffic and take some.”

The Horseless Carriage Club of America (HCCA) is hosting the Bellingham Marathon Tour that consists of five days of touring around Whatcom and Skagit County back roads. Each day provides for between 50 and 100 mile tours with destinations like Peace Arch Park, Silver Lake and the Burlington Air Museum. Some participants come from Whatcom County while others are from out of state. Discover Ferndale talked to one participant who was up from California and saw license plates from Montana, Utah and Nevada.

Today’s 80-mile tour included cruising through Ferndale and stopping for lunch at Pioneer Park.

HCCA members told Discover Ferndale they are not afraid to take their restored vehicles on the road. Some much so they plan events like the one happening this week in Bellingham to tour around, doing what these cars were made to do. While they avoid the interstate (most HCCA vehicles top out at about 45MPH), there are plenty of side roads that provide for a beautiful drive and destination.

Here are the promised photos taken while the group was stopped at Pioneer Park. Click to enlarge.
