Heavy rains impact area roads

Water over roadway. Discover Ferndale stock image

Unrelenting rains today have caused some streams to rise and some so much that they are impacting roadways.

According to a weather station near Ferndale High School, 1.25″ of rain has fallen today.

Northbound I-5 between Slater Road and Bakerview Road has had one lane blocked this evening since around 5pm due to standing water in the left lane. Washington State Patrol has advised avoiding northbound I-5 if you have to go through that area. A backup has extended to beyond the Bakerview Road interchange.

A large section of Portal Way south of Grandview Road has inches of water across both lanes. The speed limit through the area is 50mph.

Water stretches across the roadway west of LaBounty Road on W Smith Road and again further west around the corner on Hovander Road. Water also stretches across the roadway on Nielsen Road near the entrances to Hovander Homestead Park and Tenant Lake.

Not all of these locations have signage posted to forewarn drivers. Drivers should be alert to the dangers of standing water, especially in the outlying areas.
