Gas leak forces evacuation of N Bakerview Road retail stores

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — First responders were dispatched to the west end of the Fred Meyer shopping center on W Bakerview Road today, July 13th, about 12:10pm due to a report of a gas leak.

According to radio transmissions, additional Bellingham Fire Department resources were being dispatched to the scene to assist with an evacuation.

Shops in the western end of the parking lot along with the Fred Meyer fuel pumps were evacuated after a natural gas leak was detected where some underground work was being done in the parking lot.

W Bakerview Road remained open in through area as of 12:25pm but access into the west end of the parking lot were being blocked according to Bellingham Police Department radio transmissions.

BFD crews cleared the scene at 1:20pm and access to the west end of the shopping center resumed.
