
Fire units responded to a report of a car fire on I-5 northbound this afternoon about 2:15pm.
The fire units from Whatcom Fire District 7 that first arrived reported finding a fully involved car fire just north of Smith Road on the side of the roadway on northbound I-5. No injuries were reported.
Traffic was stopped for the initial fire response and then allowed to pass in one lane. The resulting back up reached beyond Slater Road.
Crews were able to clear the scene and both lanes of traffic were reopened after about 30 minutes. As of 3pm, the traffic back up remained south of Slater Road.
UPDATE 3:10pm
Traffic is beginning to recover as the back up is no longer as far as Slater Road.
