Flood advisory issued for low-lying areas of Whatcom County ahead of expected storm

WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — A flood advisory was issued August 17th at 10pm by the National Weather Service Seattle office. It remains in effect until 2am.

The advisory statement warns to expect surface water flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas due to expected heavy rains. The advisory area includes Whatcom, Clallam, Island, Jefferson, San Juan and Skagit counties.

At 957 PM PDT, Doppler radar and automated rain gages indicated heavy rain due to thunderstorms. Minor flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly in the advisory area. Up to 0.5 inches of rain have fallen.

  • Additional rainfall amounts of 0.5 to 0.8 inches are expected over the area. This additional rain will result in minor flooding.
  • Some locations that will experience flooding include… Bellingham, Mount Vernon, Oak Harbor, Port Angeles, Anacortes, Sedro-Woolley, Forks, Friday Harbor, Sumas, Point Roberts, Joyce, Deming, Sekiu, Beaver, Neah Bay, Lynden, Ferndale, Burlington, Blaine and Roche Harbor.

Current Nooksack River level forecasts reflect increases in the river levels but all remain far below action or flooding levels.
