Ferndale-based Healthy Pet has been awarded the 2016 Partners for Clean Air Platinum award for its work to reduce air emissions from its onsite operations and shipping.
The awards have been given by Northwest Clean Air Agency (NWCAA) to businesses in Skagit, Whatcom and Island counties annually since 2010. Three levels are awarded: Platinum, Gold, and Silver with the Platinum Award winner being chosen as the stand‐out business among the Gold award winners according to NWCAA.
According to the press release from Healthy Pet,
“Our team is quite honored to receive this recognition of environmental stewardship. For 30 years we have implemented responsible business practices by focusing on green technologies and committing to green programs. We are unwavering in our pursuit of professional excellence and producing sustainable products that don’t compromise performance,” states Ted Mischaikov, CEO. “The NWCAA Platinum Award is testimony to our continued work in reducing our carbon footprint. I am very proud of the entire Healthy Pet organization for continuing to pioneer new ways to support a healthier planet.”
NWCAA cited the following accomplishments for giving the award to Healthy Pet,
- Replaced an old sawdust burner with a low-nitrogen dioxide gas burner to reduce emissions of solids by more than a ton per year.
- Switched to electric forklifts in place of liquid propane gas models.
- Strictly enforced no-idle policies for trucks waiting to be loaded and unloaded.
- Operated a zero-emission corporate car for business uses and leased energy-efficient front-end loaders to replace less-efficient models.
- Increased use of intermodal transportation for its products and reduced the use of over-the-road trucking.
- Instituted a “Towards Zero Waste” recycling program that drastically cut landfill waste.
- Replaced 100% of their lighting with energy-efficient LED lighting.
