Ferndale man breaks down neighbor’s door with axe, assaults them

FERNDALE, Wash. — On Tuesday, February 3, 2026, about 3:20am, Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) deputies were dispatched to the 1200 block of Lattimore Road in Ferndale due to report of an assault with a weapon.

According to an affidavit of probable cause filed in Whatcom County Superior Court, it was reported that a neighbor had broken down a door to a residence using a 2-handed axe and then attempted to assault the reporting party with the axe.

When deputies arrived, they were told the victim had been sleeping when the suspect broke in with the axe. The door had visible heavy damage. The victim said they blocked the axe attack. The suspect then grabbed a knife and held it in a threatening manner. The victim had visible minor injury.

Deputies arrested the suspect, identified as Everlains Eden Guiterez Hernandez, age 46, and booked him into Whatcom County Jail.

Guiterez Hernandez made an initial court appearance on February 4, 2026, where prosecutors requested bail be set at $100,000 and defense asked for bail at $40,000 with a cash alternative. The court set bail at $50,000 bond or $5,000 cash.

He is currently facing felony charges of 1st-degree assault and 1st-degree burglary in Superior Court.

As of February 8, 2026, Guiterez Hernandez remained in custody at the jail.

    I’m happy that this guy was apprehended but shocked that he would be let loose for $5000. I would be horrified if someone bashed in my door with an axe. I think the court needs to make clear to the citizens how it is that this man should be let free. If there is a reason he can be trusted not to bash our doors in with an axe, it would be nice to know.
