EVERSON, Wash. — First responders were dispatched to the intersection of S Pass Road and Goodwin Road on Thursday, October 31st, about 5:50pm due to a crash reported by a Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) deputy.
Officials with Whatcom County Fire District 1 said their crews were able to be onsite within 6 minutes of being dispatched since they “were serving the community at the Everson Park Halloween event.”
The WCSO issued the following on Friday.
A two-vehicle high-speed T-bone collision was witnessed by an on-duty deputy at the intersection of Goodwin Road and South Pass Road. Additional Whatcom County Sheriff’s Deputies responded along with Everson Police Officers, Whatcom County Fire District 1 and Support Officers of Whatcom County.
A vehicle with four occupants was
attempting to turn left from Goodwin Road onto S Pass Roadwhen it was struck by an eastbound vehicle. The impact ejected an 18-year-old passenger, who was reported in critical condition. An 11-year-old passenger was pronounced deceased at the scene. The other two occupants were also injured and transported to PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center.The driver of the eastbound vehicle was 30-year-old Tyler Higdon of Sedro-Woolley. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the collision. Witnesses reported the eastbound vehicle was traveling above the posted speed limit.
Higdon was transported to PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center where he was evaluated and treated.

Correction: WCSO issued a correction noting the vehicle with 4 occupants was traveling westbound on S Pass Road when it attempted to turn left to go southbound on Goodwin Road.
Roads leading to the intersection were temporarily closed for several hours following the crash.
Higdon was arrested and booked into the Whatcom County Jail about 11pm charged with suspicion of vehicular homicide while under the influence or while driving recklessly and vehicular assault.
Higdon has prior felony convictions out of Skagit County Superior Court for 2nd-degree burglary, 2nd-degree trafficking in stolen property and bail jumping.
As of November 1st, Higdon remained in custody at the jail awaiting a preliminary hearing where a bail option, if any, would be expected to be set.
