It is official. Students in 2nd through 5th grades will be able to join a chess club in their Ferndale elementary school. For many, this will be the first time they have had the opportunity at their school.
Ferndale High School Chess Club Advisor Randy Kaech announced that, with the assistance of parent volunteers and student teachers from the Ferndale High School Chess Club, every elementary school in the Ferndale School District will have a chess club this year.
The rules, tactics and chess etiquette will be taught by members of the Ferndale High School Chess Team. A guide on how to teach and learn chess together with their child is also available for parents.
Last year the high school chess team was crowned champion of the Northwest League.
According to Kaech, most of the chess clubs will be meeting after school, once a week, starting the week of October 19. For students who cannot make the weekly meetings, or if a chess club fills up, schools will be offering a Chess Group option. Students enrolled in a Chess Group can practice at home, receive all chess club materials, participate in online learning and play, and then join in the evening and weekend chess tournaments.
FHS Chess Club will also be sponsoring a series of free Thursday evening “Battle Royale Chess Parties” open to all chess players from kindergarten through 12th grades. The first will be held November 19 and they are scheduled through April of next year. Click here for more details.
