Updated: Early morning thunderstorm rattles the area

An unforecast thunderstorm rolled through the Ferndale area this morning and may have provided an earlier wake-up than the alarm clock for many.

Several flashes of lightning followed close behind by thunder could be seen and heard beginning around 5am today. As seen on local weather radar, the storm cell approached from the northwest and traveled south-southeasterly as it formed over western Ferndale. The core of the storm passed directly over the Sandy Point neighborhoods and on to Lummi Island.

Brief heavy rain accompanied the thunderstorm. A weather station at Sandy Point recorded nearly an inch of rainfall during a 15 minute period at the time of the storm’s passing. Neighbors there reported a coating of hail on the ground as evidenced by the photos below.

No power outages or other incidents were reported as a result of the weather. Forecasters say the clouds are expected to clear by the afternoon, making for a sunny day.

Another thunderstorm has formed and is passing over the Ferndale area.
