Officials are still investigating the cause of a single-vehicle crash on W Smith Road near the Northwest Soccer Fields about 4pm today, June 30th.
The road was blocked to traffic in both directions between Northwest Drive and Waschke Road until shortly after 5pm as a result of the crash.
Officials at the scene said a pickup truck left the road and collided with a utility pole on the south side of the road just west of Waschke Road. According to an official at the scene, the pole was held in place after the crash only by the wires connected to it.
Whatcom County Fire District 7 Division Chief Ben Boyko said they transported the driver by ambulance to PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center as a precautionary measure.
Puget Sound Energy crews are expected to be onsite this evening to replace the damaged pole and will have flaggers at the scene for however long that will require.
Drivers can expect delays through the area on W Smith Road while the work is happening this evening.
