UPDATED: Crash followed by car fire closes W Axton Road, 2 dead

WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — First responders were dispatched to the 300 block of W Axton Road about 11:30pm on Monday, May 18, 2026, due to report of a 2-vehicle crash with one vehicle on fire in the roadway and another in a ditch.

Upon arrival, firefighters radioed that one vehicle was fully involved.

At 3:30am, Whatcom County 911 posted to a social media account that the road was closed due to possible road damage.

The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office told Whatcom News via email that both drivers were the sole occupants of the vehicles, and both were pronounced deceased at the scene. The medical examiner’s office assumed jurisdiction.
