FERNDALE, Wash. — Officials with the City of Ferndale made available today, July 22nd, several videos created to help fill the void resulting from the cancellation of this year’s Whatcom Old Settlers Picnic events.
Included are performances from Bellingham-based High Mountain String Band recorded as they performed from the Pioneer Park stage, interviews with local dignitaries, a documentary about the 2019 Paddle to Lummi event, a brief history about the cabins at Pioneer Park and an original radio drama set in 1932 Ferndale.
The videos are available to view online via the City of Ferndale website.
Whatcom County Old Settlers Association President Lynda Lucas said back in April when the event cancelations were announced, “We are all heartbroken but it’s the right thing to do. We want everyone to be safe.” While Lucas had big plans for this year, she’s moving those to next year’s event since, considering this year’s events were canceled, it will be the 125th Whatcom Old Settlers Picnic.
This is the second time the annual event has been canceled since it began in1895. The first time occurred due to the United States involvement in World War II.
