FERNDALE, Wash. — Officials with the City of Ferndale recently announced plans to install 1 park facility and begin accepting bids to construct another.
VanderYacht Park is scheduled to see installation of a long-awaited precast concrete vault unisex toilet structure adjacent to the north parking lot. The parking lot area will be closed Wednesday, January 27th, and Thursday, January 28th, during the installation.
City officials have said a vault toilet is the best fit for the park since it has no utility service. $20,000 was budgeted for this project.
Pioneer Park will be the site of a new picnic shelter near the Star Park playground and the nearby permanent bathrooms. An invitation to bid on construction was recently published by City staff.
The shelter will be a heavy timber structure about 52-feet by 24-feet in size and set on a concrete foundation according to the project description. It will be equipped with picnic tables throughout and a countertop and sink area with running water at 1 end.

The shelter is expected to cost between $315,000 and $350,000, according to an engineering estimate. The State of Washington awarded a $174,600 to the City to be used towards completion of the project. The remainder will be paid out of park impact fees collected on development activity.
$8,750 is hoped to be raised through the sale of 175 personalized legacy tiles that will be placed around the base of the sink area. Tiles are $50 each. Click here for more information about purchasing tiles.
