The suspect captured on surveillance video before he stole a vehicle was recently arrested and booked for 2nd degree motor vehicle theft.

According to Ferndale Police Sergeant Travis Card, they were able to develop probable cause to arrest Cody Jesse Shell, age 23, and using information indicating he was in Everson, officers from the Everson Police Department checked a residence and located Shell, who was taken in to custody without incident.

Sgt. Card said further investigation resulted in the recovery of the stolen vehicle from the 2800 block of Martin Road. The stolen vehicle was returned to the registered owner but tools inside of the vehicle when it was taken were missing and considered stolen.

Shell was subsequently booked at the Whatcom County jail for theft of a motor vehicle and 2nd degree retail theft, according to jail records.

Sgt. Card credited the public’s assistance with being able to quickly identify and locate Shell. The Ferndale Police Department released information including video stills of the suspect and asked for assistance in identifying the suspect. It was information resulting from that outreach which resulted in him being apprehended and arrested.

“This is yet another example of our community working together to make Ferndale a safer place to live.  Thank you all for your help,” said Sgt. Card

According to jail records, Shell remains in custody.
