Expect delays on Main Street Today

UPDATE: 2:55pm
Bridge inspection equipment and staff have left the bridge. Traffic is now flowing normally both directions on Main Street.

Traffic has backed up east to to the I-5 interchange. But it is not interfering with traffic getting onto and off of I-5. Eastbound traffic through downtown is backed up to Fourth Avenue. It remains advisable to avoid Main Street near both sides of the river bridge if possible.

Workers on site said to expect the delays to last three hours (1pm to 4pm). The State DOT office originally wanted to do this on Friday but the City asked if they could wait until today to less impact Main Street drivers.

Original Story
The City of Ferndale sent out notice this morning that the Main Street Bridge over the Nooksack River will be reduced to one lane “for  a few hours” after 1pm today, Monday, April 27. This is to enable “a routine bridge inspection by the Washington State Department of Transportation.”

Restricting travel to one lane usually requires flagging traffic to alternate between eastbound and westbound through the open lane. Expect delays and traffic backups in the area. Alternate routes are via Slater Road, Portal Way and Grandview Road.

You can monitor the situation east of the bridge on the live Discover Ferndale webcam. This story will be updated as the work progresses.
