BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Bellingham Police Department (BPD) issued a statement on July 2nd regarding a woman arrested on a felony harassment charge after threatening to stab a woman multiple times after being asked to leave private property.
According to BPD, officers were dispatched to the 1600 block of Cornwall Avenue due to a report of a person trespassing and another person harassing the reporting person. Upon arrival they learned the woman had been previously trespassed from the same property.
The victim told the officers the woman had threatened to stab her while berating her with “racial and sexual identity slurs.”
While officers were speaking with the woman, she continued to refer to the victim using derogatory slurs.
The woman, identified as Johnya Kathleen Springer, age 38, was arrested and booked into the Whatcom County Jail. As of July 4th, she remained in custody pending being able to post a $5,000 bond or $500 cash bail.
The other person making threats was cited for misdemeanor harassment and issued a court summons to appear.
Springer was out of custody at the time of her arrest while awaiting trial for another felony harassment charge stemming from an incident in March.
About 3:45pm on March 10th, BPD officers responded to the hospital due to Springer making threats “to stab, cut and murder” a family member. Springer later left a voicemail message threatening to kill the family member’s dogs.
At the preliminary hearing, prosecutors requested bail be set at $2,500 and defense requested Springer be released under her own personal recognizance. The court granted her release under her own personal recognizance. She did appear at her initial arraignment hearing on March 22nd.
