Bellingham man arrested, suspected of attempting to lure children into his car

BIRCH BAY, Wash. — Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) issued a statement on Wednesday, June 26th, announcing the arrest of a Bellingham man suspected of attempting to lure 2 children into his vehicle while outside a retail store in Birch Bay.

WCSO deputies were dispatched on Monday, June 24th, around 7:30pm due to a report of a man attempting to lure the children into his car outside the store.

According to the statement, the man approached the children and started a conversation. He then offered them candy and toys. He reportedly asked, “Do you guys never want to see your parents ever again?” The man retrieved a frisbee out of the trunk of his car reportedly in an effort to entice the children to come near his vehicle.

The children’s parent was in the store at the time and observed the interactions with the man and told him to leave the children alone.

The man then walked into the store and pulled up a chair next to 3 juvenile girls, who were alone. The man was reportedly heard saying to the juveniles, “Do you guys want money? I have money in the trunk.”

The man reportedly realized the parent of the two children was calling 911. As he left the store, he reportedly stated he wasn’t a terrorist and fled in his vehicle south on Birch Bay Drive.

The man, identified as Corey Cardwell, age 52 and of Bellingham, was contacted the next day by WCSO detectives. Cardwell reportedly denied all allegations but did show detectives frisbees in his trunk. He was positively identified by the parent and another witness to the attempted luring.

Cardwell was booked without incident into the Whatcom County Jail charged with suspicion of 5 counts of luring.

As of June 26th, Cardwell remained in custody at the jail pending a preliminary hearing where bail may be set.
