Air quality measurements reported from the Loomis Trail-Custer monitoring station jumped from the “Good” range past “Moderate” and into the “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” range overnight.

As wind speeds in the area dropped below 5mph late yesterday, the Northwest Clean Air Agency air quality monitoring station in Custer began reporting air quality began worsening (see gauge graphic). The station data indicates the air quality began worsening after 6pm, quickly moving through the MODERATE range and reaching into the UNHEALTHY FOR SENSITIVE GROUPS range.

When air quality is in the UNHEALTHY FOR SENSITIVE GROUPS range, people with heart or lung disease, asthma, diabetes, infants, children, adults older than 65, pregnant women and those who have had a stroke should limit time spent outdoors.

It was three days ago, July 17th, when Discover Ferndale reported the Northwest Clean Air Agency air quality monitoring station in Custer showed air quality had worsen just enough to be categorized as MODERATE. In that report it was forecast a drop in winds late Tuesday through Wednesday could create “the potential for another bump in the air quality during that time.”

At 6am this morning, the monitoring station reported air quality had returned to the upper end of the MODERATE range.

When air quality is in the MODERATE range, people with asthma, respiratory infection, diabetes, lung or heart disease or have had a stroke are advised to limit outdoor activities or do activities that take less effort, such as walking instead of running.

Winds are forecast to remain calm until Thursday morning.
