3 earthquakes detected east of Everett

While small enough not to have been felt unless you were nearby, three localized quakes within a few hours has the attention of those in the immediate area as well as seismologists.

Three quakes were recorded today within a couple hours a few miles south of Granite Falls (see map), approximately 80 miles from Ferndale. Their magnitudes were 3.4 (11:36am), 3.0 (1:18pm) and 2.6 (1:33pm). All were at a depth of between 10 and 12 miles.

The Director of Pacific Northwest Seismic Network John Vidale commented shortly after the events that this cluster of quakes was either “a mainshock with aftershocks, or a swarm brewing.”

The Pacific Northwest Seismic Network website revealed several smaller quakes were recorded about the same time within the immediate area of the three larger events (see graphic below).
