BELLINGHAM, Wash. — A 22-year-old Burlington man was arrested and booked into Whatcom County Jail Saturday, July 13th, charged with suspicion of driving under the influence, driving while his license was suspended, attempting to elude a police vehicle and reckless endangerment.
The arrest and charges followed an incident that began about 1:05am when a Bellingham Police Department (BPD) officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop due to suspicion of driving under the influence and the vehicle fled south on I-5 from the Ohio Street interchange. According to radio transmissions at the time, the vehicle was reaching speeds over 100mph and had turned off its lights. The officer terminated the pursuit and a description of the dark 2-door was broadcast to local law enforcement agencies.
A northbound Washington State Patrol trooper spotted the suspect vehicle southbound on I-5 and reported turning around to try and catch up to it. The vehicle was found crashed at the intersection of Nulle Road and E Lake Samish Drive just west of I-5.
The driver, identified as Curstin Ampeire Cubria, age 22, was taken into custody at the scene of the crash about 1:25am. The 2 passengers in the vehicle were released. No one was reportedly injured in the crash.
As of July 15th, Cubria remained in custody at the Whatcom County Jail pending being able to post a $20,000 bond or $2,000 cash bail.
