Vehicle vs pedestrian collision closes I-5 Sunset Drive overpass lanes

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — First responders were dispatched to the I-5 Sunset Drive overpass due to report of a vehicle versus pedestrian collision on Thursday, July 9, 2026, about 4:45am.

Initial reports from the scene were that the incident was in the westbound lanes and they were being closed to traffic.

According to the PulsePoint EMS dispatch log reporting system, at least 1 patient was transported from the scene to PeaceHealth St Joseph’s Medical Center via a medic unit.

As of 7:45am, Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) reported the westbound overpass lanes were closed and motorists should plan for delays.

The lanes began being reopened about 8am according to reports from the scene.
