Randy Kaech, a familiar face behind the counter in the Ferndale Post Office, used to give free lunchtime chess lessons for years. But after a break of five years and with help from the Ferndale High School chess team he is back at it again.
The Summer Institute of Chess Mastery (SICM), is a free chess class intended for beginning chess players in middle or high school who wish to reach an intermediate or advanced chess skill level.
The program includes lessons at the Ferndale library, online instruction and play, and participation in the summer series of chess tournaments being held at the Bellingham and Ferndale public libraries.
Previously only open to Ferndale students, this summer students currently in 5th-8th grades located in the Blaine, Meridian and smaller school districts may also enroll.
Students must register for SICM by May 30.
