John R. Vaughn, age 36, was booked into the Whatcom County Jail yesterday charged with 1st degree assault. Vaughn was involved in an assault in the Motel 6 parking lot on March 8th.

According to an Affidavit of Probable Cause Determination submitted to the Superior Court of Whatcom County, Vaugh and Jason Riemland got into an argument and Vaughn stabbed Riemland and Riemland shot Vaughn. Both were transported to PeaceHealth St Joseph Hospital. Riemland’s statements to investigators said he and Vaughn were friends and pointed to the possibility Vaughn was angry with Riemland for being around Vaughn’s girlfriend.

Vaughn required hospital treatment over several days. According to Ferndale Police Lieutenant Matt Huffman, at some point Vaughn left the hospital on his own accord. Law enforcement had been attempting to locate him when he came to the Ferndale Police Station yesterday to pick up some personal property. He was arrested without incident at the station and booked into the jail.

According to court records, Riemland’s attempted 2nd degree murder charge has since been changed to 1st degree assault with a deadly weapon/force. He was released March 9th after posting a $50,000 bond.

According to jail records, Vaughn remained in custody at the Whatcom County Jail as of this morning.
