Whatcom County Fire District 17 recently announced they sought out and have been awarded two grants through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program totaling $154,000.

One is an operations grant in the amount of $36,000 to be used to replace the district’s portable radio equipment.

The other is a vehicle grant in the amount of $118,000 to purchase a new brush truck which will replace the district’s aging one. Brush trucks are used for fighting grass and  fires in wooded areas so are outfitted for off-road travel.
