Updated: Family displaced after residential fire destroys Lynden residence

LYNDEN, Wash. — First responders were dispatched to a fully involved residential structure fire near the intersection of E Bartlett Road and Guide Meridian today, March 30th, at about 11:25am.

Law enforcement temporarily closed the Guide Meridian northbound lanes through the area to traffic.

The garage at a residence located at the entrance to the Hidden Village RV Park and Campground caught fire and the fire quickly spread to the residence.

A neighbor reported hearing what sounded like an explosion shortly before seeing a plume of dark smoke coming from the garage.

North Whatcom Fire & Rescue (NWFR) and investigators from the Whatcom Fire Marshal’s Office remained on-scene most of the day while heavy equipment was brought in to help access the structure to ensure all hot spots were extinguished.

NWFR Division Chief Shaun Ward told Whatcom News no one was injured but a family cat was unable to be located. The Red Cross was contacted to assist the family displaced since the residence and garage were a total loss. A vehicle in the garage was also a total loss.

The fire crept from the garage into the residence via the attic according to Ward. Firefighters encountered several layers of roofing topped by a metal roof which made it difficult to get water on the attic fire.

After the fire had been knocked down, firefighters were able to locate some important family heirlooms and a safe and return them to the family. Ward said a heavy equipment operator brought in to help clear the roofing material spotted the safe among the debris and retrieved it.

No cause for the fire had been announced as of noon the following day.
