Current Central City Water Association customers can expect to be converted into Ferndale City Water customers as a result of a project planned for later this year.

The City of Ferndale has invited contractors to bid on the project which is described as the installation of approximately 6,500 feet of underground water main along Heights Drive, Field View Drive, Crestline Street, Hilltop Road and Heather Drive. Installing hydrants, valves and other related items are included in the project description.

The existing water main is will be decommissioned as opposed to being removed, according to Public Works Director Kevin Renz.

Once installed, the new water mains will be connected to those properties who have completed a Temporary Construction Easement. Connections will be made at the water meter boxes and utilize existing service line to each building. This portion of the work, according to Renz, will be done by Public Works crews.

The project is expected to begin as early as June and is expected to be completed in October. The total cost of the project is currently estimated at just over $2.26 million. Properties being connected to the city water system as a result of this project will see an additional charge on their water bills that will go toward recouping project costs.

There will be an occasional need to shut off the water system in the impacted neighborhoods. Renz assured there will be 24 hour notices given for such planned shut offs.

Neighborhood roads will be closed to all but local traffic at times during the project.

Flyers will be mailed to neighborhood residents with the project schedule once determined and the city will host an open house just prior to the start of the project with final details.
