Next weather challenge: surface flooding

Neighbors are encouraged to clear snow and ice away from drains in their neighborhoods and clear debris in streams and creeks in their property to help minimize the potential for surface water flooding.

The National Weather Service issued an Areal Flood Warning for Whatcom County this morning. It is in effect until late tonight. The warning is the result of expected warmer temperatures combined with up to an inch of rain. Between the thawing of several inches of snow and ice on ground and the heavy rain, there is the potential for roads, creeks and streams to flood in some areas.

Drivers should be alert for standing water on roadways as well as in areas where creeks and streams may overflow onto roadways.
