WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — The Mt Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest has prohibited target shooting across all lands, roads, and trails within its boundary, including the Mt Baker Ranger District, beginning August 14, 2026, according to a public use restriction order executed by the agency.
According to the order, the prohibition was enacted for resource protection and safety due to fire danger, dry conditions, and regional resource constraints. The order remains in effect through October 31, 2026, unless rescinded sooner.
Discharging a firearm is prohibited with specific exemptions, according to the order. Persons actively engaged in a lawful hunt under state regulations are exempt. Exemptions also apply to federal, state, or local officers, members of an organized rescue or firefighting force in the performance of official duties, and persons with a valid forest permit specifically exempting them from the restriction.
According to the document, violations are punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000 for an individual or $10,000 for an organization, imprisonment for not more than 6 months, or both. The order was executed on August 14, 2026.
