Memorial Day events scheduled in Whatcom County

WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — The following events are scheduled to commemorate Memorial Day, a federal holiday honoring those who died while serving in the military. 

Ceremony at Enterprise Cemetery (May 31)

Ferndale American Legion Kulshan Post 154 is holding a Memorial Day ceremony on Monday, May 31st at 11am at Enterprise Cemetery, 7041 Vista Drive in Ferndale.  The event will feature a keynote speaker, a flag folding ceremony, and the playing of taps.  Everyone is invited to attend.  For more information, contact Dave Johnson, Enterprise Cemetery, at 360-366-5341.

Festival of Flags at Greenacres Memorial Park (May 29, 30 & 31)

Over 1,800 veterans’ flags will line the “Avenue of Flags” at Greenacres Memorial Park located at the corner of W Axton Road and Northwest Drive in Ferndale.

Memorial Day program at the American Legion Post (May 31)

American Legion Albert J Hamilton Post 7 is holding a Memorial Day program at the Post, 1688 W Bakerview Road in Bellingham, on May 31st at 11am. Bellingham Mayor Seth Fleetwood will speak followed by a Post Everlasting ceremony with honor guard. This will be followed by laying of memorial wreaths. Chili, clam chowder and corn bread will be available after the ceremony.

Lynden cemeteries Memorial Day ceremonies (May 31)

Ceremonies are scheduled for 10am at Lynden Cemetery, 1975 Front Street, and 1:30pm at Greenwood Cemetery, 605 East Wiser Lake Road.


Memorial Day is the only day when US flags are flown at half-staff except when directed by the US President or state governor. On Memorial Day, US flags are raised to half-staff at sunrise on and left there until noon when they are to be raised to full staff the remainder of the day.
